Singularity University Establishes Local Chapter in The Bahamas

The SingularityU Nassau Chapter – to explore and foster the use of exponential technologies for Impact, innovation and change, and to address the grand challenges communities face in The Bahamas and the surrounding region of the Caribbean and the Americas.

“We’re excited to support The Bahamas as an innovation hub for exponential technologies in this region of the Americas,” said Dr. Desiree Cox, MD, PhD, Rhodes Scholar, Singularity University social impact fellow and the ambassador of SU Nassau. “I believe we can use exponential technologies to address the challenges of health and social equity in The Bahamas and create an abundant future for everyone. That is what inspired me to reach out to Singularity University to establish a Nassau Chapter and formal partnership. While SU is not a traditional university that offers degrees, its programs are an important complement to the for-credit curricula at select universities and innovative entrepreneurs in The Bahamas.”

On November 24, 2017 — Singularity University (SU), a global community with a mission to educate, inspire, and empower leaders to apply exponential technologies to address humanity’s grand challenges has established a local SU chapter and formal partnership in Nassau, Bahamas. Dr. Cox is ably supported by a small, but strong team of professionals with a variety of backgrounds. Dr. Charles Diggiss, Travis Miller, Michael Fountain Jr., Mark Palmer, Felicity Humblestone, Stanley ‘Chike’ Burnside, Llewellyn Boyer-Cartwright, Dr. Jonathan Rodgers and Victoria Sarne. Collectively, they cover a broad spectrum of interests and experience in the fields of business, law, medicine, academia and entrepreneurship.

Not withstanding its recent inception, the Nassau team has been busy. Some of the projects they have initiated are: a series of regular, monthly Lunch & Learn ‘think-tank’ type meetings where each team member makes a brief presentation on a topic of their choice; a presentation defining the mission and goals of SingularityU at an ‘Insight Stage’ meeting founded by one of the Singularity team members; a reaching out with the intention of future collaboration to Lend-a-Hand, an established local NGA, supporting disadvantaged youth in the community; and a forthcoming event, ‘Exponential Futures”, January 13th, at the University of the Bahamas for roughly 75-100 children exposing them to exponential technology with an opportunity to interact with panel members which includes the SingularityU Nassau Chapter.

A much larger, international project is in the making for the spring of 2018. This will be a combined SingularityU/TheHealinc Hackathon for accelerating the use of exponential technology for healthcare givers, businesses and entrepreneurs within the US, The Bahamas, the Caribbean and Latin America.
