Bahamian Rhodes Scholar Leads The Way In Caribbean Regional “Future-Health” Revolution
Dr. Desirée Cox Hosts Future-Health Innovation Hackathon for Students and Entrepreneurs from the region including coastal US, The Bahamas, Caribbean, coastal South and Central America as well as the diaspora.
Nassau, Bahamas, July 1, 2018 – The HEALinc Enterprise (HEALinc), an innovation incubator led by founder and CEO, Dr. Desirée Cox, hosted its first annual “Future-Health” Hackathon with a HEALinc-University of Central Florida iCORPS entrepreneurship educational event to kick off the six (6) week plus future-health entrepreneurship educational program aboard Royal Caribbean’s Empress of the Seas from May 11 – 14. This unique, immersive experience brought together entrepreneurs, postgraduates, thought leaders and faculty from the Bahamas and the United States who are pioneering the design of innovative healthcare technologies. The event was held in partnership with the University of Central Florida (UCF), led by Dr. David Metcalf and Dr. Tom O’Neal, and the National Science Foundation (iCorps) and included three days of exploration, networking and collaboration to help this talented group accelerate the progress and commercialization of their healthcare projects.
“The global healthcare industry is moving faster than ever, and the Bahamas, the Caribbean and Latin America are falling behind,” said Dr. Cox. “Through fast-paced, all-encompassing events like this one, we’re cultivating a spirit of enterprise and crowd-collaboration among creatives and developers from our region whose ideas might never come to life without proper mentorship, access to resources, and support.” During the boot-camp style cruise, the participants were exposed to the key aspects of building a start-up including leadership skills, design-thinking, business-model canvas development, finding the ‘product-market’ fit of their innovation, serial prototyping, and more.
“Our goal at HEALinc is to activate 1 billion healthcare creatives by 2028,” Dr. Cox continued, “and from the level of imagination and talent that we saw on display during the Hackathon cruise, we’re off to an incredible start.”
The Future-Health Hackathon is begins with a 6-week intensive program with University of Central Florida (UCF)-iCORPs being the main HEALinc educational curriculum partners. HEALinc participants join students and entrepreneurs from all over the world based at UCF-iCORPs during this period to develop their prototypes and refine pitches for investors as they seek to obtain seed funding for their start-ups. The 6-week intensive is followed by a 48 hour HEALinc-IBM ‘Tech Hack’ where successful entrepreneurial leaders come together with developers to build out an app or tech component of their prototype. Finally, entrepreneurial leads will have an opportunity to launch their Start-Ups at the 2018 inaugural HEALinc GlobalFuture-Health Innovation Summit, which will be held in The Bahamas, 7th-9th October. Singularity University Establishes Local Chapter in The Bahamas
The SingularityU Nassau Chapter – to explore and foster the use of exponential technologies for Impact, innovation and change, and to address the grand challenges communities face in The Bahamas and the surrounding region of the Caribbean and the Americas.
“We’re excited to support The Bahamas as an innovation hub for exponential technologies in this region of the Americas,” said Dr. Desirée Cox, MD, PhD, Rhodes Scholar, Singularity University social impact fellow and the ambassador of SU Nassau. “I believe we can use exponential technologies to address the challenges of health and social equity in The Bahamas and create an abundant future for everyone. That is what inspired me to reach out to Singularity University to establish a Nassau Chapter and formal partnership. While SU is not a traditional university that offers degrees, its programs are an important complement to the for-credit curricula at select universities and innovative entrepreneurs in The Bahamas.”
On November 24, 2017 — Singularity University (SU), a global community with a mission to educate, inspire, and empower leaders to apply exponential technologies to address humanity’s grand challenges has established a local SU chapter and formal partnership in Nassau, Bahamas. Dr. Cox is ably supported by a small, but strong team of professionals with a variety of backgrounds. Dr. Charles Diggiss, Travis Miller, Michael Fountain Jr., Mark Palmer, Felicity Humblestone, Stanley ‘Chike’ Burnside, Llewellyn Boyer-Cartwright, Dr. Jonathan Rodgers and Victoria Sarne. Collectively, they cover a broad spectrum of interests and experience in the fields of business, law, medicine, academia and entrepreneurship.
Not withstanding its recent inception, the Nassau team has been busy. Some of the projects they have initiated are: a series of regular, monthly Lunch & Learn ‘think-tank’ type meetings where each team member makes a brief presentation on a topic of their choice; a presentation defining the mission and goals of SingularityU at an ‘Insight Stage’ meeting founded by one of the Singularity team members; a reaching out with the intention of future collaboration to Lend-a-Hand, an established local NGA, supporting disadvantaged youth in the community; and a forthcoming event, ‘Exponential Futures”, January 13th, at the University of the Bahamas for roughly 75-100 children exposing them to exponential technology with an opportunity to interact with panel members which includes the SingularityU Nassau Chapter.
A much larger, international project is in the making for the spring of 2018. This will be a combined SingularityU/TheHealinc Hackathon for accelerating the use of exponential technology for healthcare givers, businesses and entrepreneurs within the US, The Bahamas, the Caribbean and Latin America.

Dr. Desirée Cox is delighted to welcome Ms. Rhonda McDeigan-Eldridge, CPA, CA, Founder & Impactioneer of HAP, to partner with THE HEALinc team.
The acronym HAP is derived from “Harness all Possibilities”, the tag-line of which is ‘embracing a growth-mind-set’. The program is designed to bring a focused, empathetic approach to getting persons unstuck and inspiring them to recognize and take action to harness their individual infinite possibilities. HAP offers a comprehensive mentoring to achieve personal and business aspirations; this includes health, happiness and wellness and defining strategies to prepare the client to shift into transition mode and accelerate their progress towards their goals.
THE HEALinc team anticipates the HAP collaboration will provide the initial preparation of candidates who wish to participate in future HEALinc cohorts planned for 2018 onwards. THE HEALinc becomes the next logical step forward affording the candidates the opportunity for exponential growth.
